DOG FETCHES A SCARY SURPRISE

BERLIN -- A dog out for a walk ran after a stick his owner had thrown and returned with a live hand grenade.

70-year-old Horst Bachmann pried the World War II grenade from the mouth of his Dalmatian-Labrador, Hajo.

He then hid it under a bush in the Berlin, Germany suburb and called police. The area was evacuated and explosives experts made it safe.

Bachmann said, "Hajo has already found loads of things. He could easily become a search dog."

Berlin still has thousands of tons of live ordnance from World War II hidden under the surface of its sandy soil.
