PUTTING TEETH IN POLICE K-9s

BARTOW, Florida -- When Apak the police dog takes a bite out of crime -- he does it with choppers made of steel.

His top two canine teeth - the long biters - are made of metal.

Apak is one of a number of police dogs that have lost their teeth in the line of duty. Sgt. Steven Pry of the Polk County, Florida Sheriff's Department, feels the dog's pain. He says when one of his canines loses a tooth, he cries.

Replacement teeth don't come cheap. The Wall Street Journal reports they cost about $1200 each.

But Pry says Apak's expensive choppers are worth it. He notes the steel teeth not only can stand up to a gun barrel, they're are also much more intimidating to the bad guys.
